Annual General Meeting 2008

The meeting was well attended.  Reviewing the year showed how much we've achieved and developed: swimming sessions, the second weekend away, ongoing work with the police including consultations on policies affecting trans people and much more.  With 2 members of the committee stepping down over the course of the year, it was great to gain a further 2 new members and for a Glasgow member to be affirmed in his role by the membership.  From this position, we aim to build on our successes to date.

26th October 2007:Transmen take to the countryside

This was our second annual weekend away.  This time we had exclusive use of a hostel in central Scotland for transmen to relax, socialise and enjoy the fresh air.  In return for the funding we received from LGBT History Month, a workshop was held.  We produced posters featuring the lives of transmen, past and present.  We went for a walk on the Saturday and visited another exciting castle before going our separate ways on the Sunday.

11th September 2007

Free money for the group!  Buy online from over 100 retailers, supermarkets, utilities, media and many more.  TransMen Scotland hope this income will fund the group's mobile phone and even provide something towards future community events.  Visit http://www.buy.at/transmenscotland now to find out more.

7-9th September 2007

A fantastic time was had by Transmen Scotland members who attended the residential weekend hosted by the Western Boys, who are based in Somerset.  Around 60 guys, with a few friends and family members, got together at the first national event for around 6 years.  There's no doubt the internet cannot replace the experience of being surrounded by people like oneself.

It all went swimmingly!
The first session of Different Strokes was a great success with seven guys taking to the waters.  We were a varied bunch - some experienced swimmers, some who had never ventured into the pool before - guys who have had chest surgery - and guys who have not.

We revelled in our own private session at the pool and the staff were respectful and let us get on with our swimming.

A few of us enjoyed time in the sauna - which is small but cosy - which I guess is what a sauna should be.

So if you are wondering about taking the plunge, I can heartily recommend it.  See you on the 28th!!

Making a slpash!
Different Strokes is a new swimming session
exclusively for transgender people which will be held in Edinburgh
twice a month. Different Strokes will meet on the 2nd and 4th
Saturday of each month for an initial pilot period of 10 sessions
(until August 2007)and will be FREE.

The group is open to all transgender people (both ftm and mtf) and is
organised jointly by Transmen Scotland , the LGBT Centre for Health
and Wellbeing and Edinburgh Leisure.

We will have sole use of Glenogle Swim Centre
Glenogle Road, Edinburgh EH3 5JB from 4pm for an hour and we will
also be able to use the sauna and fitness equipment.

So if you would like to take some exercise in a safe and supportive
environment then come along!

Changing facilities are in individual cubicles along the poolside.
We have gained agreement for people to wear a close fitting short
sleeved t-shirt to swim in if required. We hope that this will make
it more comfortable for guys to swim who have not had chest surgery.

Perhaps you have not been able to swim for a while or have never sum
since transition. This is your opportunity to come along and try it
out. You can also come simply to use the fitness equipment or have a
sauna.

The dates for the next few months are:
14th and 28th April; 12th and 26th May; 9th and 23rd June; 14th and
28th July; 11th and 25th August.

After this time we will evaluate the service and hopefully apply for
further funding so Different Strokes can continue.

So, get out that swimwear and we look forward to seeing you on the
14th

Regards

Lewis Reay
